Welcome to the Sewing Room!
This room is dedicated to the textile arts, from spinning, weaving, and dyeing, to knitting, crochet, embroidery, tatting, and (of course) sewing. In this plastic-centered era, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find clothing that is made with natural fibres, much less clothing that is attractive and comfortable, as well. So, we're firm believers in sewing for ourselves, and if you've never done much sewing, you'd be surprised at just how simple and rewarding it can be.
This room works in conjunction with the craft room, as some of the things we create combine textile arts with other skills, but to the household trying to live a petrochemical-free life on a budget, these are skills we couldn't do without.
In this section of the site, you'll find information about everything from natural dyestuffs and how to use them, or even making your own clothes "from sheep to shawl", to sewing projects for children and beginners, as well as patterns for everything from everyday clothing to fancy-dress costuming, cloth dolls and toys. In addition, I'll be covering more advanced skills such as tailoring your family's clothes for a perfect fit, the basics of pattern-making and how to take measurements, my "textile essentials" that I couldn't live without, and as always, information on materials, sources and resources.
If you've ever wanted to keep your family in warm slippers (that keep your ankles warm, and take the chill off of even hardwood or stone floors) for nothing more than the cost of a couple of skeins of yarn, or the price of a fleece and a drop spindle, you've come to the right place.
